JAISALMER JOURS: WHERE WHAT HOW

Jaisalmer, the border city of Rajasthan, India, is a MUST-VISIT. If you like overwhelming landscapes, archaic architecture and beautiful road trips, JAISALMER is where you need to be.

HOTEL SELECTION

Jaisalmer is a small city. There are innumerable hotels. I would advise you to choose one which is at a central location. You would like to see the Golden Fort as your persistent view.

OUTSKIRTS
Camp
There is nothing more worthwhile than to camp in the desert. Again, there are a number of camp resorts, some even at detours. I would advise you to camp at a place, as close to the desert as possible, and the one that hosts good folk shows and offers favorable food choices for you.

The Haunted Village
The haunted village of Kuldhara is made of ruins. Legend says that the king and the residents were wiped off overnight, hence, the name. The Jain temple a little ahead of Kuldhara is a boon for peace-lovers and those who like to pray or meditate or just take some silent strolls in the windy expanses.

Borders
I would highly recommend you to take a road trip to the Longewala (Indo-Pak) Border and further to the edge of Jaisalmer, Tanot Mata Temple. The well-built roads are surrounded by HUGE sand dune mountains! Both places are serene and historic.

CITY
Havelis
There are majestic Havelis that house the belongings and stories of its wealthy resides. Small intricate interior work, with central corridors, can take your breath away. You might want to budget your time accordingly. I stayed at Jaisalmer for 3 days, the maximum of my Rajasthan trip.
Jaisalmer Fort
This fort defines Jaisalmer’s skyline and is the most tourist-crowded place. I would advise you to visit on a weekday, early morning to avoid the rush. You can buy turbans, intricate handmade carpets, bags, accessories and more.
Eat
Do drink the milk delicacies like Lassi, Buttermilk, Hot milk and dine on Dal Baati without fail!
Inter-city Travel
I chose to travel by private transport to ensure maximum flexibility, but parking private vehicles is a little difficult.

REMEMBER

● Best time to visit- Winter Months. December is the BEST.
● Carry your thermal wear and sand appropriate shoes.
● Always negotiate and double-check local advice.
● Immerse yourself in the street music.
● DO NOT miss the sunrise and the sunset in the desert.
