Have you ever struggled to find a shirt or a belt from your wardrobe right before a meeting? Or stuffed a pile of clothes one over the other which falls on you the moment you open the cupboard?
Well, I had always been that person until Marie Kondo (also known by the name ‘Konmari’) came in my life. A Japanese organizing consultant and author of the famous book- “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing” has laid out several methods to ensure that the above problems do not occur. I combined Konmari’s principles along with my version of minimalism to achieve a super organized wardrobe, which saves time, looks visually clean and aesthetic and makes everything easily accessible.
Let me share some of the ways I organize my wardrobe in-
What I mean by this is that before starting organizing I organize everything. I throw every piece of item from the cupboard onto the bed or the floor so that I can see what all I have lying inside it.
Yes, it does sound tedious, but it sorts so many things! I make sections like-
Shirts | Dresses | Casual Tees | Formals | Pants | Skirts | Scarves | Indian | Lounge | Night | Athleisure |
Shirts | Dresses | Casual Tees | Formals | Pants/Bottoms | Skirts | Scarves | Indian Wear | Lounge Wear | Night Wear | Athleisure |
I further sort my shirts, tees and pants by color.
Denim | Indian | Shrugs | Pull-Overs |
Indian Style Earrings | Western Style Earrings | Rings | Neckpieces | Bracelets | Watches | Hair Accessories |
Big | Big | Big | Big Chunky | Indian | Gold belt Silver belt | Big rubber bands |
Medium-sized | MediumSmall/Everyday | MediumGold | Indian | Big Chunky | Black belt | Small rubber bands |
Small | Hoops | Silver | Small | Bangle | Brown belt | Fancy hair pins |
Other colors | Thread | Normal hair pins |
Lipsticks | Lip Balms | Eyeshadows | Full-Face Makeup Kit | Makeup Brushes | Eye makeup Kit | Makeup removers | Tissues and Makeup Wipes |
Nude Pinks | Eye Pencils | ||||||
Bright Pinks | Mascaras | ||||||
Maroons | Eye Liners | ||||||
Reds | Eyelash curlers | ||||||
Browns |
Sling Bags | Indian Bags | Totes | Bucket bags | Backpacks |
Hair Dryer
Hair Straightener
Iron
Heels | Flats | Boots | Slip Ons | Indian | Trainers | Athletic | Rain Wear |
After this long and exhaustive step comes the easy part. I just place everything neatly in each section- following Konmari’s philosophy that everything must have a home to return.
Organizing my wardrobe in this way has made my life so easy. It keeps the shelves clean, saves time to pick out and put together an outfit and ensures I don’t lose an item or two.
So I hope this organization technique and free section organizer helps you sort your wardrobe as well.
You can modify it as per your taste and style- for example, i don’t have a section of knit-wear because I live in a tropical climate and you can omit the Indian wear section all together if that is not part of your country or culture.
