Rome that can’t be visited in a day

An Evening in Rome

Rome that cant be visited in a day

Strolling through the iconic city of – Roma

Rome, the city of Romance; Rome the city of History. Call it anything, Rome will and must take your breath away- owing to its magnificent architecture, time-galloping history, wall-paper like city-scapes and marvellously delicious food.

  1. Spending my morning at Alessandro Downtown.

I started my day in Rome by bargaining with a taxi driver to reach my hostel – Alessandro Downtown. It was pretty hard to bargain, but I had a good chat with the driver and he even suggested me some good places to visit in and of Rome. There is a beautiful town of Tivoli and a striking beach of Ostia in the neighbourhood of Rome that you can visit, as per his suggestion (which I could not cover). He made me thank the gods for the strangely pleasant weather (and unusual 14 degree Celsius with bountiful sunshine) this Christmas. Yes I was going to spend my Christmas in Rome!

2.Alessandro Downtown

I reached my hostel and refreshed my self in the common showers as the check in time was in late afternoon. But the hostel was pretty neat and offered me a day of free breakfast (which was generous too) of the three days I was staying there. As every hostel does, they handed me a map of Rome circling the couple of places I must see and sent me off to dine at an Italian Ristorante.

3.Dining at Ristorante Alfredo.

When in Rome dine like a Roman. I had dreamt of eating at an original Italian Ristorante for years. And voila! Here it was. My moment of the dreams. I ordered a Margerita for lunch and a caramel cut for dessert. It really matched up to the Italian meal of my dreams. I was extremely grateful to Mr. Roberto (the owner of the ristorante) for offering me free water for the meal.

4. Santa Maria Maggiore

I walked a great deal through the grand Roman streets. The buildings of Santa Maria Maggiore transported me to a medieval time in History. An enchanting experience, I felt I was soaking the Roman sunshine and street life to the fullest. The streets were mostly empty, with trash bins lined up in order and cars parked in their border. I hopelessly fell in love with the Roman street magic; when I had my first Macchiato (in Italy, yes!) at a tiny café where everyone was watching football with their respective coffees in hand.

5. Chilling by the St. John Latern Archbasilica

I finished the leftover pizza from my afternoon meal at the St. John Latern Archbasilica. It was a beautiful view of the Rome of the evening. The sunshine was slowly sinking in, and my next stop was the Colosseum. Torn between repose of the current spot and excitement for the next one, I chose to spend a few more moments at the Basilica – It was hard to believe if I was looking at Rome or a painting of itself!

6. The Colosseum

The Colosseum was a humbling as well as an experience of grandeur. It is that feeling I had when I first saw the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal! The Colosseum was magnificent, huge and beautiful. It instantly rolled me back years in time and history. It seemed as if the Colosseum was the only structure standing in history while everyone and everything around it has moved ahead in time. It truly was an experience of a lifetime.

In all, my first day in Rome was a classic experience that I had always wished for. Walking through the Roman alleys, eating the Italian cuisines and brooding on the footsteps of the colosseum over its beauty. There was nothing that I could have asked for more. – Except my small dinner – a slice of mozzarella pizza coupled with a café Latte. Grazie Roma.
